Fred Loimer

When people think Austrian wines, they invariably think “white wine.”

For too long, Austria’s wine production has been almost entiely consumed by their domestic market. But today, guided by a new generation of winemakers, the Austrian wine industry is looking beyond its borders.

And they have a lot to offer. The younger generation inherited both fabulous terroirs and the expertise that comes from hundreds of years of winemaking tradition. Fred Loimer is one of the leaders of Austria’s new generation of winemakers.

With over forty hectares of vineyards which have been grown biodynamic since 2005, the winery produces a suite of wines focussing on Austria’s core varieties: grüner veltliner and riesling. The bottlings from their troika of grand cru sites—Spiegel, Käferberg, and Seeberg—can rival the depth and definition of the world’s greatest white wines. Vintage upon vintage, Fred Loimer makes exceptional top cuvées Lois and Lenz. But the true mark of a great winemaker is predicated upon their ability to produce impeccable entry-level wines, as can be tasted in Loimer’s generic Kamptal wines.
