Campagnola

Founded in 1907 in Marano, in the heart of the Vapolicella, this family enterprise run by Guiseppe Campagnola, is one of the region’s leading wineries. They proudly produce classic Venetian appellation wines with grapes sourced from the family’s own vineyards. They also purchase grapes from over 50 growers who they work with closely to assure a continual supply of top quality grapes. The Campagnola family work meticulously, from the vineyard to the chai, the proof of which can tasted in their wines.

The family’s portfolio is confirmation that quality and value are not mutually exclusive. Vintage upon vintage, the wines show exceptional precision and reflect the best of what each appellation has to offer. Great wines are a result of good grape growing, and wether they be indigenous or international varieties, the Campagnola’s understand what is needed to maximize each. Their IGT wines, pinot grigio and chardonnay, are amongst our best selling white wines in both our private import and SAQ portfolios, combining quality with exceptional value. The flagship wine is the cuvée Caterina Zinardi, in both DOCG Valpolicella and Amarone. They are the product of the estate’s best vineyards, made with the attentive winemaking that has been the trademark of Campagnola wines.

The family also has an important negociant business which it has developed over the past years which allows them to produce entry level wines from not only Veneto, but as well from other Italian regions. Their nero d’avola “Cataldo” and Merlot Colli Euganei “Il Brolo” are both superb examples of this new enterprise, made with the same care that has made Campagnola such a success.

We applaud Guiseppe Campagnola and his team for their consistently great work, and remarkable ability to produce great value wines without sacrificing quality.

Ca’Marcanda

It was in 1996 that Angelo Gaja purchased this fabulous property in Castegneto Carducci in the heart of one Tuscany’s most renowned appellations, Bolgheri. While the land was not under vine, Gaja could see the potential of the soils, planting merlot, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, sangiovese and syrah. Ca’Marcanda’s first vintage was in 2000 and in 2002, Gaja built an ultra-modern winemaking facility.

As is with all of the three family domains, the winemaking is supervised by Guido Rivella, who has been Gaja’s trusted winemaker for more than 30 years. The cuvée Promis, a blend that is predominately syrah, is a Toscana IGT which shows how well this grape is adapted to Bolgheri. “Magari” is a classic Bolgheri blend, however due to a few parcels which are just outside the appellation zone, the cuvée is also classified IGT. The grapes for Ca’Marcanda’s DOC Bolgheri is sourced from the best parcels which are located around the winemaking facility. While the wines already garner wide critical acclaim, one can’t help but feel that the best is yet to come for this exceptional property.

Antoniolo

Situated northern Piedmont, under 100km from Milan, Gattinara might be the most underestimated appellation in Italy.

It flies under the radar, existing in the shadow of two of not only Piedmont’s, but Italy’s most venerable appellations, Barolo and Barbaresco. Like its esteemed neighbours, Gattinara’s reds are made with nebbiolo, known locally as spanna.

Winemaking in the Gattinara dates back to the 12th century, but after a cataclysmic hailstorm in 1905 the vineyard was practically abandoned until the 1960’s. Today, their is renewed interest in this historic appellation and if people are coming back to Gattinara’s wines, it’s in part due to the region’s most renowned winery, Antoniolo.

Founded in 1948, the winery is operated by the brother and sister team of Lorella et Alberto Antoniolo. Their mother, Rosanna, remains a legend in this corner of Italy. They produce wines of purity and elegance, with much softer tannins than the nebbiolos of Langhe. Like all traditionally-made nebbiolo, delicate aromas and light colour are but appearance. These are wines of great complexity, depth and density.

Leading the way are three crus: Osso San Grato, San Francesco and Castelle. While they drink well immediately, their ability to age should not be discounted. The Coste della Sesia is a superb introduction to Antonolio’s wines while the Gattinara, which is available as a speciality product at the SAQ, shows the same trademark finesse and power as the crus.

Garnering praise by specialized wine media over the years is nothing new for Antoniolo. In 2010, their 2005 Osso San Grato was proclaimed “red wine of the year” by Italy’s prestigious Gambero Rosso.
